That said, a measurement is not a diagnosis by itself. Likewise, a finding on flexion-extension imaging must be interpreted cautiously and only when the patient can safely perform the movement. The value comes from correlation, not from treating one number as a verdict.

When radiographs are appropriate, proper technique matters. Poor positioning, inconsistent views, and uncalibrated measurement procedures can compromise the usefulness of the study. Digital tools do not correct a weak clinical process. They make a sound process more transparent.
Static views can show alignment and degenerative findings, while motion studies may provide additional information about cervical mechanics in selected cases. Motion imaging is not automatic after an accident, particularly in the acute phase. It depends on patient safety, symptom tolerance, and the examiner's clinical judgment. In some situations, magnetic resonance imaging, computed tomography, neurologic consultation, or orthopedic referral may be more appropriate than additional X-ray analysis.
