This is where nuance matters. Nerve irritation exists on a spectrum. Some patients have pain and paresthesia without measurable weakness. Others show subtle neurologic deficits that are not obvious until compared side to side. A normal quick screening in an urgent care setting does not always rule out clinically relevant irritation, especially early after trauma.
Why imaging and objective testing may be necessary
Symptoms can suggest nerve involvement, but documentation is stronger when subjective reports are paired with objective findings. Depending on the case, further evaluation may include advanced imaging, digital radiographic analysis, musculoskeletal ultrasound-informed assessment, balance testing, and computerized vision tracking when associated post-concussion features are present.
If a disc injury is suspected, MRI may be necessary to evaluate whether a herniation or bulge is contacting a nerve root. If ligament injury or spinal instability is part of the mechanism, structural analysis becomes important because unstable segments can contribute to ongoing nerve irritation even when standard films appear unremarkable on a casual reading.
For legal cases, this distinction carries weight. A chart that simply says "radiating pain" is not the same as a record that documents dermatomal sensory loss, motor asymmetry, positive provocation findings, measured functional restriction, and imaging correlation. The first is a symptom report. The second is a defensible injury analysis.

Whiplash is often discussed as if it only causes muscular strain.
