What to Do After a Work Injury in Rhode Island: A Step-by-Step Guide

A work injury can happen in an instant. What you do in the hours and days that follow can significantly affect both your recovery and the outcome of your workers compensation claim.

This guide walks you through the steps — clearly and without jargon.

Step 1: Report the Injury to Your Employer Immediately

The first and most important step is to notify your employer as soon as possible after the injury occurs. Rhode Island workers compensation law requires injured workers to report their injury to their employer promptly. Delaying this report can complicate your claim.

Your report should include when the injury happened, where it happened, and how it occurred. Get confirmation that the report was received and keep a copy for your records if possible.

Step 2: Seek Medical Attention — and Know Your Options

Your employer may direct you to a specific clinic or occupational health center for your initial evaluation. You can go there for your first visit. But understand that in Rhode Island you have the right to choose your own chiropractor for your work injury care — even if you have already been seen by an employer-designated provider.

You do not have to stay with the first provider you see. If your symptoms are not resolving, if your evaluation felt rushed, or if you feel your injury is not being taken seriously, you have options. A thorough chiropractic evaluation at Cityside can be added to your care at any point while your claim is open.

Step 3: Document Everything From Day One

Start keeping a personal record of your injury from the moment it happens. Write down the date and time of the injury, exactly how it occurred, who witnessed it, what symptoms you felt immediately and in the days that followed, and how those symptoms have changed over time.

This personal record is separate from your medical documentation and can be valuable if your claim is ever disputed. Details that seem minor early on can become important later.

Step 4: Get a Thorough Chiropractic Evaluation Early

The quality of your medical documentation from the beginning of your claim matters enormously. Workers comp carriers look for objective clinical findings — measurable data produced by standardized tests — not just your description of how you feel.

At Cityside Chiropractic we evaluate work injuries with advanced objective testing including computerized balance assessment, spinal imaging analysis, and range of motion measurement with objective instrumentation.

These tools produce the kind of measurable findings that support your claim clearly and hold up if the case becomes disputed.

Early objective documentation establishes a clinical baseline from day one. That baseline tells the story of your injury throughout the life of your claim.

Step 5: Let Us Handle the Insurance and Paperwork

Once you come in for your evaluation, Cityside takes over all the administrative coordination. We communicate directly with your workers comp carrier, handle billing and authorization, and work with your attorney if you have one. If you do not have an attorney we work directly with the carrier on your behalf.

You do not have to figure out which insurance applies, how to submit billing, or how to communicate with an adjuster. That is our job. Your job is to show up for your appointments and focus on getting better.

Step 6: Follow Your Treatment Plan

Consistency matters in a workers comp case both for your recovery and for your claim. Gaps in treatment — missed appointments, long breaks between visits — can be used by a carrier to argue that your injury is less serious than reported or that you have reached maximum medical improvement prematurely.

Show up. Follow through. Let the clinical record reflect the reality of your injury and your recovery.

Step 7: Know That It Is Never Too Late to Get a Proper Evaluation

If your claim has been open for weeks or months and you feel your injury has not been properly documented, it is not too late. A comprehensive evaluation at Cityside adds objective findings to your clinical record at any point while your claim is active.

Findings documented late are better than findings never documented at all — especially if your case is heading toward a dispute, an independent medical examination, or a settlement.
